Přikrývka / Blanket / 2006
The basic concept of this textile work is a floor rag sewn in-between pink ticking and blue satin. The invisible presence of the extra fabric produces an effect of softness. The simple reference to femininity and work with the female body is expanded to include Sam's original embroidery - a technique usually associated with women's work - connecting all three materials. In this case, the tedious manual labor is replaced by a linear machine drawing. Time for contemplation is translated into rapid, concentrated performance. Gaining time is a reference to liberation. Another contradiction is found in the combination of a simple concept with a stylized depiction. When it came to the desire to decorate the blanket, the canon of the concept's elementary vocabulary was too confining. This is another way in which the artifact represents freedom. Because the embroidery is sewn all the way through the fabric, the two-dimensional drawing feels like a three-dimensional object.
